Sealing MDF

Sealing 18mm thick MDF is not 100% necessary for crafting, but LaserworksUK highly recommended that you do so, as this will allow you to get the best possible finish when decorating your crafts. We do recommend that you seal all the mdf surfaces and especially the edges, using a diluted pva glue or primer prior to painting.

You can use most paints and sprays to decorate including Furniture paints, Emulsions and Acrylic sprays and Acrylic paints.

Acrylic paints will give you the best possible finish it is easy to apply and mix colours. A little paint goes a long way.

Make sure you sand between coats with a 240 grit sandpaper or higher.

Application with a foam brush or roller will give you the best finish with outstanding results.

Guide below for sealing mdf prior to decorating.

Sealing MDF: Medite MDF is used for many crafting projects. It is an easy to work material which takes paints, stains and varnish very well. Unfortunately MDF swells with moisture and noticeably with the application of acrylic (water based) paints if the surfaced are not sealed before painting, leaving you with a fluffy surface which can be very difficult to put right.

Seal MDF to Prevent Distortion: To prevent MDF from swelling, you should seal the edges and the top and bottom surfaces before applying acrylic (water based) paint coatings. If your crafting project will be anywhere near high humidity or water, it should be primed and sealed on all edges to make sure it does not swell or distort, even a small amount of water seeping onto your MDF project can cause it to swell noticeably if they have not been sealed.

Seal All MDF Edges: The edges of MDF boards absorb paint heavily. Make sure to seal these edges. You can use an acrylic paint sealer or Sealing MDF with a PVA Glue, white wood glue. To seal the edges you can paint a layer of thin PVA "white wood glue" over the edge with a glue brush or a pump spray bottle, making sure the glue layer is as even as possible, with no build up at the edges. The sealed MDF edge can be sanded once dry, but you should only give it a light sanding to flatten the sealing agent used.

Seal Top and Bottom Surfaces: Seal the MDF with PVA Glue. You can seal MDF surfaces with a thin layer of diluted PVA glue. Most PVA-based wood glues require dilution with water to get a thin sealing layer on your MDF. Thin PVA glues designed for paper work well if applied with a roller.

We only use FSC® Certified and CE Marked MDF. This is Manufactured to BS - EN622-5 – E1 Formaldehyde emission.

MDF Cut Edges

Laser Cut Edges: The laser cutting process will leave a medium brown finish to the edges of the MDF after the laser cutting process has finished. Any laser processing marks to the top and bottom of the mdf can be removed by using a light grade sandpaper or by simply painting over them.

CNC Cut Edges: If your item was cut on one of our CNC router machine you will have no burnt edges to contend with, the edges will be cleanly cut but some areas may need a little preparation by the crafter before decorating.
